Fans adore the role, though, and the film as a whole has gone down as a cult classic of science fiction. And positive or negative, pretty much every critique agreed on one thing as a consensus: Chris Tucker’s portrayal of Ruby Rhod was jarring at best. While The Fifth Element (1997) received decent reviews from critics overall - who seemed to enjoy the film well enough - the negative reviews of the bunch were particularly ruthless. ![]() Bruce Willis stars a taxi driver in a 23rd century New York City - he’s also a former member of Earth’s Special Forces, and Mila Jovovich costars as an alien who was recreated using biotechnology. Its plot is entirely off-the-wall: a force of tremendous evil manifests itself in space as a humongous fireball, and the Earth’s Special Forces are assigned to save the planet. He bars no holds, but sometimes that candor often translates to awkward moments from everyone involved. This is a wonderful film with idiosyncratic charm, and that's due in large part to Luc Besson’s honest style of storytelling. But for the most part, Rush Hour 3 (2007) remains nowhere near among the top echelon of Chris Tucker’s many hilarious performances. Again: sometimes, these characters make their marks here. ![]() And the characters go back and forth with each other simply to provide the film a tired dynamic of Chris Tucker’s rapid speech eclipsing Jackie Chan’s broken English. What few standout lines Tucker does utter throughout the film are overshadowed by his long-winded tangents that more times than not develop into screaming matches with his famous costar. And the performances from its actors (Tucker, who plays Detective James Carter, and Jackie Chan, who plays Detective Lee) undoubtedly reflect that number’s negative implications. And although it raked in decent money at the box office - as films in this series tend to do - it holds an abysmal approval rating of 17% on critical consensus website Rotten Tomatoes. This is of course the final entry of Brett Ratner’s famous buddy-cop, action-comedy franchise.
